“Eating disorders (ED) are characterized by under or over eating, and motivations for either vary, including emotion regulation. The label “emotional eating” is a common term, and the actual behaviour of eating to cope with emotions is considered within the realm of eating disorders.”
“Eating for emotion regulation reasons has been extensively empirically researched and is now well understood within the eating disorders. Thorough specialized diagnostic assessment for eating disorders is essential to guide referral for appropriate treatment. This specialized diagnostic assessment sometimes establishes an eating disorder diagnosis, when the patient’s personal assessment was to the contrary, and vice versa. In either case, the diagnosis allows for referral to the appropriate treatment.”
