HEALTH EDUCATOR  – Full Time-Temporary

The Bulimia Anorexia Nervosa Association (BANA) requires a HEALTH EDUCATOR  – Full Time-Temporary (35 hours per week, 12-month maternity leave contract) (JOB REFERENCE #HE-4-24)

 Job Summary

Reporting to the Executive Director and working closely with the Health Promotion team and BANA staff. The Health Educator is responsible for facilitating/performing health promotion and wellness education planning and implementation activities; participating in skills and capacity building activities; participating health promotion presentations, workshops and health fairs, in an effective and efficient manner; providing consumer-oriented eating disorder information and reference material within the community using print and electronic resources; participating in continuing education and forums.                                                                                                          

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Conducts and updates presentations for schools and community as requested during flexible times
  • Represents BANA at health fairs and forums
  • Represents BANA on committees related to health promotion goals at BANA
  • Recruits, oversees, trains and schedules volunteers for a variety of roles
  • Responsible for organizing Eating Disorders Awareness Week in collaboration with staff to educate, engage and create awareness in the community and beyond
  • Social Media outreach with the Communications and Public Relations Lead i.e. designing posts, uploading photos at events, IG lives and organizing panels
  • Provides training to community organizations
  • Identifies and develops eating disorder wellness and education initiatives based on needs of particular populations.
  • Identifies opportunities to develop collaborative partnerships and linkages with a diverse array of stakeholders and sector champions in the community, clinical, health administration, partner organizations and government divisions.
  • Works collaboratively with a diverse array of stakeholders and sector champions in the community.
  • Participates in community networks that address specific community eating disorder health issues 
  • Advocates on behalf of community resources to access opportunities/resources for capacities and skills related to eating disorders.
  • Participates in the identification and development of health events/forums/opportunities that foster shared learning and capacity building.
  • Implements a variety of health promotion strategies including health education, social marketing, population health and community development in order to foster individual self-awareness
  • Provides eating disorder promotion strategies with cultural competence and ethno cultural sensitivity.
  • Provide a monthly board report to the Executive Director of updates
  • Participate in EDO-Prevention work as requested and support the Eating Disorders Prevention Specialist
  • Act as the Vendor Coordinator for YQG TogetherFest
  • Performs cross-functional and/or other duties consistent with the job classification, as assigned or requested

Participates in research and statistical reporting

  • Participates in community based participatory research and/or quality initiatives.
  • Participates in collecting statistical reporting, including statistics required by BANA

Participates in forums

  • Presents at conferences, seminars and workshops
  • Seeks out opportunities to publish research findings in collaboration with research partners
  • Precepts students from variety of community health programs. 

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

 Education

  • Completion of graduate degree in health related discipline or recognized equivalent required, or Bachelor’s Degree plus additional education and related years of experience

Experience

  • At minimum, over 3 years practical and related experience
  • Minimum of two years of experience in a mental health setting with a focus on children, youth and adults
  • Experience required in health promotion, health education, or child/youth education,
  • Experience with related  mental health areas and community development preferred
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with multiple groups and stakeholders
  • Clean driver’s abstract and a current and valid Class “G” Ontario Driver’s License with reliable transportation to support travel throughout Windsor-Essex County

  • Facilitation skills and ability to drive consensus across different sectors both in-person and virtually
  • Knowledge and experience of health promotion, population health, community development principles, as well as the determinants of health required.
  • Ability to work collaboratively as a member of a team, making the best use of own skills and expertise and those of colleagues is required.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with other program staff and community practitioners in order to provide activities, programs and services required.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills to communicate in a thorough, clear and timely manner required.

  • Demonstrates an awareness and understanding of specific communities and a response to their needs required.
  • Understanding/knowledge of conventional/alternative health practices and how these practices may relate to health and wellness and cultural diversity are required

Qualifications and Skills Required:

  • Well-developed presentation, networking and marketing skills;
  • Demonstrated patience for both telephone and person-to-person situations;
  • Strong organizational, problem-solving and critical thinking skills;
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, both oral and written;
  • Sound judgment and diplomacy are key competencies
  • Computer literacy with developed skills and experience in various software applications including word processing skills
  • Demonstrated ability to manage high volume and varied work assignments with accuracy and flexibility and in a timely fashion;
  • Ability to work independently under tight time restraints and establish priorities;
  • Flexibility and ability to take initiative in responding to needs as they arise;
  • Flexibility for occasional evening/weekend events/presentations
  • Knowledge and sensitivity to work in a culturally diverse environment;
  • Self-motivated with demonstrated ability to function as part of a team and/or independently;
  • Creative, and exhibit a good sense of humour;
  • Very good attendance record;
  • Good performance record.
  • Perform other duties that support the mission and vision of the organization and/or as assigned based on position responsibilities and/or site requirements

  • This position may also require representation at community and agency events including fundraising, Bingo’s or other BANA events as scheduled
